Newbury Historical Society

 Historic Marker Committee

May, 2008

The Newbury Historical Society, NHS, is asking residents to provide the historic significance of their homes. Our goal is to encourage research and appreciation of the diversity of architectures and tell about it in our history.  To date five homes have been identified and we are seeking additional homes/structures. To be included in the program and to be given an attractive wooden sign for your home from the NHS, the home/structure should fulfill two or more of the following criteria;

·        Age: built between 1700 and 1899.

·        Archeology: Site has yielded important information in local history or pre-history.

If your home or structure meets one of the above criteria, the committee asks that you  complete the attached application form and return to the address printed on the form. A few suggestions in researching and authenticating your property in completing the form; first know your property parcel’s number, then create a list of previous owners and physical changes to the house/structure. Your current deed is a good starting point and then work backward... The Register of Deeds can provide information of previous owners Denise Walter, Newbury’s Land Use Board and Assessing Assistance has agreed to assist interested property owners in their search.

This project will help document much of Newbury past which is largely a mystery and is waiting to be explored.

The Historic Marker Committee is anxious to hear from homeowners who qualify and are interested in this documentation and are willing to work closely with them.  Further information may be obtained from Diana Morris at 763-5859/ or bdmorris5868@verizon.net.
