Welcome
As a member you will join other citizens who share their enthusiasm to enhance the beauty of Newbury, not limited to gardening, but also to aid and support various Newbury activities.
History
The Newbury Beautification Committee (NBC) started as a vision of gathering Newbury residents together to help make the Town of Newbury even more beautiful and to promote pride in our community.
Diana Morris invited eleven ladies to her Bowles Road home to discuss her vision and the purpose and mission of creating such a committee.~ The enthusiasm generated was contagious, thus NBC was officially formed on January 7, 2004.~ Founding members were Jacqueline Donovan, Lois Flanders, Bonnie Guterl, Charlene Harris, Anne Holmes, Anne McNamara, Diane Morris, Joy Nowell, Betsy Soper, Liz Tentarelli, and Sally Wollensak.
The Town of Newbury officially "adopted" NBC and our funds were transferred to the Town Treasurer in October, 2004.~ The Town provides an annual allotment to help with the projects that are endorsed by NBC.
In 2005 the Town Report stated that "our monthly meetings are held at various Newbury locations and we have been fortunate to tour the Center Meeting House, the Grange Hall, and other historical buildings in Newbury.~ We enjoyed co-hosting two meetings with the Newbury Historical Society.~ NBC honored Alice Lynn for all she has done for the Town of Newbury and for planting the Christmas tree on the grounds of the Center Meeting House.
Some of our fundraising events have been a Fall Bulb Sale, a Spring Plant Sale, the 50-50 Raffle and the Holiday Wreath Sale.~ Donations and support from residents, NBC members and businesses allowed NBC to purchase plant containers and plants, and begin their efforts to beautify Newbury in several locations.~ Lilac bushes continue to be obtained from the State and planted at public locations.
The greening of the Town, made possible with the assistance of the male members, and placing flags and buntings throughout the Town area for the July 4th celebration, were but a few of our initial projects.~ Members worked with a landscape architect to coordinate the plantings of the new Town Office addition.~ In 2006 NBC received permission~ from the Town to create a Daffodil Celebration Garden located behind the Town Offices, which has now been relocated to Fishersfield.~ During that same year hanging baskets graced the Town for the first time and NBC members participated in Newbury's first Old Home Day Celebration.
The Center Meeting House initiated the first Annual Thanksgiving Celebration and afforded us the opportunity to assist with this event.~ In March 2007, NBC initiated, prepared and served the first Ham and Bean Supper at the Town Meeting.~ A continuance of activities includes planting and maintaining barrels, window boxes and the pots at the entrance to the Town Offices, as well as the holiday greening of the Town.
Each year the Newbury Beautification Committee expands their endeavors of beautifying and promoting pride in Newbury.
