Assessing Assistant



The Assistant Assessor reports to the Chief Assessor in order tosupport and assist in the day-to-day operations of the Assessor’s Office, including the maintenance of assessment records, receiving and taking action on abatement requests and supporting the facilitation of assessments.    

The Assistant Assessor’s position involves work both indoors and outdoors, during various and sometimes more extreme weather conditions and in potentially hazardous environments, requiring moderate degrees of physical exertion such as walking on uneven terrain and/or hills. It also involves a significant amount of sitting and computer use. The position has a rotation schedule with offices in New London, Newbury and Sunapee.

: DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:  Although the position is not necessarily limited to the following, performance of these types of duties/responsibilities is required. The following is intended to be illustrative of the expected tasks/functions for the position:  Assist the Chief Assessor in the performance of his/her duties with the goal of improving the efficiency and effectiveness of their office. 

Appraise all real property and maintain assessment records for the Town;

Perform field measurements and inspections of residential and commercial buildings, including but not limited to, new and incomplete construction, additions, alterations and demolition, subdivisions/lot splits and/or transfers, utilizing a computer-based assessing system.

 Gather information for property appraisal data from property owners, building contractors, real estate agents, attorneys, bankers and public officials.

 Answer inquiries from property owners, prospective investorsand builders, 

Receive and investigates abatement applications; defends the validity of assessments to NH Board of Tax and Land Appeals.

Maintain and update monthly sales book, owner and/or location indexes for the Town for public use. 

Create, change, and update information on property cards via data input as provided by the Assessor.

Monitor Town board, commissions, and/or committees’activities and actions in order to be a resource person to the Assessor and to identify new properties and owners, and their respective uses, to be assessed.  

Inform Assessor of appointments, schedules, deadlines, meetings, and of new and pressing developments affecting the functions, duties, and responsibilities of the Assessor.

Flag properties for updates by reviewing building permits and other resources and arrange for inspections by the Assessor. 

Prepare, maintain, and update files property files. 

Assist in preparations for annually updating the Town’s Tax Maps.  

Work closely with the Assessor and Tax Collector to insure a smooth and accurate creation of that year’s tax warrant.  

Performs such other related duties as may be required from time to time.


Applicants should have a High School Diploma or equivalent, with two (2) or more years of experience in assessing, appraisalor real estate, is preferred; or any equivalent combination of education and experience and pass a NH State Police background check. Must be able to obtain and then uphold NH Department of Revenue (DRA) – Certified Property AssessorAssistant or greater.

Appointees to the position of Assistant Assessors shall have a thorough knowledge of real estate appraisal principles, techniques, procedures, laws and regulations, as well as a considerable knowledge of building and zoning regulations, construction material costs, and workmanship.

Salary dependent on level of experience ($28.00-$35.00 per hour)
