Full time or Part time position at the Transfer Station in Newbury, NH. Position requires working Saturday and Sunday. Preference given to applicants that are certified with a NHDES Solid Waste Operator license, or with experience in the solid waste field. Job Description

Transfer Station Attendant

 

Department: Transfer Station                       Classification: Hourly: Full-Time or Part-Time

               

Job Summary 

  • Performs routine work of an unskilled or semi-skilled nature at solid waste transfer site, requiring the ability to do heavy physical labor efficiently.

 

Supervision Received

  • Transfer Station Supervisor, Senior Transfer Station Attendant and Town Administrator.

 

Example of Duties

Assists in the daily operations of the transfer station to ensure proper operation and compliance with State and Federal regulations.

  • Except as specifically noted, the following functions are considered essential to this position.
  • Knows, understands, and implements the solid waste disposal facility operating rules and procedures.
  • Monitors access to solid waste disposal facility. Makes sure that all users have valid permit.
  • Conducts visual inspection of loads as needed to prevent disposal of prohibited materials.
  • Explains operating policies and procedures to facility users to assure proper use.
  • Maintains the cleanliness and neatness of solid waste disposal facility.
  • Assists resident and commercial users in the appropriate placement of refuse and recyclables.
  • Assesses and collects fees, as required, by established schedules.
  • Maintains the recycling area and insures the proper disposal and classification of all recycled materials.
  • Packages cardboard, newspaper, aluminum, and other recyclables and stores them in a safe and healthful manner.
  • Uses and performs routine/preventive maintenance on compactor, baler, hand tools and power equipment.
  • Familiar with and executes safe work procedures associated with assigned work.
  • Compacts materials as required by the facility operating plan, and state regulations.
  • Performs related work and duties as required or as otherwise directed.
  • Must have a vehicle, and a valid driver's license, and a clean driving record.
  • Inspects and performs repairs, maintenance, or adjustments to buildings and grounds.
  • Operates heavy equipment such as a backhoe and dump trucks.
  • Operates solids handling and treatment equipment to provide timely and efficient disposal.
  • Continually seeks to improve practices to add quality and value in support of the Department’s mission.
  • Other duties as assigned.

 

Minimum Qualifications Required

Equipment Used 

  • Some experience in heavy manual labor. Ability to follow written and oral instructions.  Ability and experience operating and maintaining hand and power tools, safety equipment, and light loading equipment.
  • Work involves the operation of a skid steer loader with multiple attachments, baler, compactor, pickup truck with snowplow, glass crusher, telephone.

Environment     

  • Work inside 5% of the time and outside 95% of the time.

 

Summary of Occupational Exposures

  • May be exposed to herbicides, pesticides, fuels, solvents, household garbage, etc.
  • Exposed to high noise levels from compacting equipment.
  • May be exposed to long periods of sunlight.
  • May be exposed to poison ivy, poison oak, or poison sumac; and insects such as wasps, hornets, bees, etc.

 

Licensure/Certification Requirements

  • Certification from State of New Hampshire as Solid Waste Facility Operator, Level III.
  • Valid NH Driver’s License.                                       

 

Work Surfaces

  • Concrete, dirt, sand, clay, rough asphalt, wet, slippery terrain, and surfaces, snow and ice.

Other Considerations and Requirements

  • Ability to read basic technical and maintenance manuals.  Ability to make entries in and maintain logs, complete basic reports, and familiarity with MSDS paperwork.
  • Ability to perform manual labor in environments characterized by heat or cold, dust, noise, rain, and snow that may produce slippery conditions at the work site.
  • Reliable attendance and performance in all climatic and environmental conditions.
