Septic System Best Practices Information

There was considerable discussion this year's Newbury Town meeting on septic systems and a request for information on best practices for the pumping and maintenance of septic systems. This septic information was published on the Bulletin Board section of the town website last year and has been on the website since that time:

Did you know that the New Hampshire Department of Environmental Services (DES) and septic system designers recommend residential septic systems be pumped every two to three years. The more people there are in your household, the more frequent pumping should be.

Remember: A properly maintained septic system will adequately treat your sewage. A septic  system failure is unhealthy, illegal if not corrected and a nuisance. Also, replacing an existing system can be costly!

What You Can Do to Properly Maintain Your Septic System
First and foremost, inspect your septic tank every year. If the sludge and surface scum combined  are as thick as 1/3 the liquid depth of your tank, have the tank pumped out by a licensed pumper. Your tank should be pumped out at least every two to three years.
